This week, our hearts are with our friends in western NC. We’re sharing ways to contribute to relief efforts from Durham and beyond.
Whether you’re a North Carolinian or not, the news out of the Appalachia is likely at the forefront of your mind right now. We’re only beginning to grasp the enormity of the devastation left by Helene in our state, and efforts are underway to begin the long recovery. Here in Durham, this is a moment when our sense of community brings us together to think of those in need. Those of us who are able are eager to contribute to efforts to help the storm’s victims in the state and across the South.
When access and information are limited by such widespread damage, it’s easy to feel helpless and frustrated. WRAL has published guidance and resources about how to make the most impact with donations of funds and supplies to organizations on the ground. We’re also seeing local organizations and businesses getting involved:
Glass Jug locations, Beer Tooth Taproom, Fullsteam Brewery locations, Cocoa Cinnamon locations and The Can Opener are collecting donations for Operation Airdrop through Friday, Oct. 4.
Omie's Coffee will be donating revenues from Friday’s sales to western NC mutual aid groups.
Bright Black. and The Scrap Exchange are accepting donations at the Lakewood Shopping Center Tuesday - Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. in coordination with Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, Raleigh United Mutual Aid Hub, Triangle Mutual Aid and Diaper Bank of North Carolina.
Certainly, there will be many more ways to contribute in the long term. Our hearts are with the communities that have been destroyed and we stand in solidarity with our neighbors across the region as we grieve for friends and loved ones and the places we hold dear. Take care of yourselves.
